Beautifying campus and protecting our environment

Trash Can

Despite our stereotype of being tree-hugging hippies, we leave a lot of messes around campus, most visibly on Foss Hill. It's time we took steps to discourage such rampant disrespect for the environment and our fellow students. And it's time we stopped throwing our garbage on the ground, expecting the Grounds staff to clean it up. Such work is unnecessarily expensive and wasteful.

Recycling

Similarly, despite the ease of recycling on campus, large numbers of students can be seen throwing out recyclable items. This ongoing problem is easy to solve, with a little bit of education and the practical placement of recycling containers.

As your Senior Class Representative, I will:

  • Have trash and recycling receptacles placed on Foss Hill throughout the fall and spring months. Emptying a few trash barrels is much easier and less labor-intensive than combing the hill for trash every morning.
  • Demand the placement of recycling receptacles outside Usdan. With more students eating outside, more plastic, paper, and glass is ending up in the trash barrels on the patio.
  • Demand that President Roth rescind the moratorium on chalking. Chalking is an environmentally safe way to communicate with our fellow students, and saves the thousands of sheets of paper used for posters.

We've worked together to achieve victory. Now, let's work together for change.
