Working for justice through fair and sensible labor policies

The simple fact is that we wouldn't be here if it weren't for the devoted, daily service of hundreds of Wesleyan staff members. Physical Plant workers, campus secretaries, dining staff, and other campus workers deserve a living wage—not just as compensation for their work, but as a matter of justice.

Yet, tough economic times and the University's responsibility to keep costs down for students are also important factors in the labor policies that the University must make. A fair and sensible middle ground that serves the interests of workers, students, and administrators must be found.

As your Senior Class Representative, I will:

  • Bring all parties to the table: workers' unions, USLAC, representatives from North College, and corporate brokers like Bon Appétit.
  • Renew our commitment to a universal living wage for all workers.
  • Establish a WSA liaison to USLAC to monitor labor issues.
  • Push for an end to subcontracting labor in circumvention of union contracts and responsible compensation practices.
  • Support contract proposals that fairly compensate workers while also leaving the University with a sustainable balance sheet for the future.

We've worked together to achieve victory. Now, let's work together for change.
